A Merry Christmas

Highlights of the season.

Lights a the Pedernales Electric Cooperative in Johnson City, Texas. It was very pretty.

Candy from the previously mentioned Whole Foods. From clockwise from top left, we have: Marzipan, a green tea truffle, vodka orange truffle, salted dark-chocolate covered caramel, basil truffle, and another salted dark-chocolate truffle...they're really good.

One of my favorite places in Austin, TX.

The headquarters for Whole Foods.

This is N.'s brother takin' a bite.

Our Duty.

My cousin graduated from the University of Missouri on Saturday, with a psychology degree.
N. and I made t-shirts featuring his nick-names, wore these ridiculous outfits, and embarrassed him as much as we could.

It was a draw.

Saw Nothing Like the Holidays today. Very different movie from Four Christmases, and I wouldn't really call it funny. Good, though. I recommend it, but more as a bitter-sweet, melancholic Christmas story, rather than a feel-good comedy.

We start traveling tomorrow so posting will be spotty.
Sorry, Brian and Miles. I do think of you. ;-)

The Movies.

Saw Four Christmases today. Cute--pretty over the top. N. and I have bet about which new holiday film, (Four Christmases v. Nothing Like the Holidays) will be funnier. Haven't seen the second one yet, which is my pick, but I think I'm in a good position to win this one.

Cooking Cornbread.

I like the drama of the harsh oven light. It makes the cornbread look so serious.
Tried to take a picture of the chili that went with this cornbread, but N. informed that while it tasted good, it sort of looked like dog food.

Don't let the cobwebs fool you.

When I'm gone at night, these little army men obviously go hunting for bugs. They keep showing up on the window sill in my studio.

Family home

This house in the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis, MO was bought by my grandparents when my mom was 16. My uncle bought it from them when he graduated from college and his wife and son (only sort of, 'cause he's in college) live in it still (my uncle passed away 5 years ago).

My grandpa gave N an LED light that clips to the underside of his hat bill. Came in pretty handy doing stuff around mom's house this weekend.

Thanksgiving 2008

I cannot and would not deny my roots as a woman who celebrates Thanksgiving in a trailer in the Ozarks of Missouri. Notice my Grandpa's home-made wind vane, complete with sparkly pinwheels and two long screws on the front for balance. My craftiness is hereditary.

Lake effect, baby.

We don't usually get it too bad this far south, but north and east of us is supposed to get 6 to 8 inches of the white stuff by this evening.

So winter is definitely coming. again.

Just love her!

Sarah Vowell spoke today at the Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library. Got there too late to get a seat inside the auditorium (she's standing at a podium against that wood paneled wall in the distant background, through the doors, but we could see her on the screen, and she did walk through the crowd RIGHT NEXT TO ME when she went in. I think we made eye contact.

Oh, celebrity...

Adapted.

I'm guessing this hook once held a clothesline that was connected to another hook on the back of our house. Poor tree. But I guess it's growing fine around it.

Something pleasant for a Friday afternoon.

It's a gorgeous (and rare) day in Ohio today--sunny, warm and breezy. So I shot this footage of the tree in my backyard, for those of you who can't go outside to see such a thing yourself.
